Choosing Healthy Frozen Meals During Quarantine

With the COVID-19 crisis, we may find ourselves consuming more frozen meals instead of fresh fruit and vegetables, which is absolutely okay! The good news is that we can still make healthy choices by reading the Nutrition Facts panel. When possible, choose meals that have 4g of saturated fat or less, at least 3-5g of fiber and 800mg or less of sodium. It’s also important to take a look at the serving size as some meals (frozen pizza, for example) have two servings instead of one. Below are some great frozen meals that are healthy, delicious and perfect to keep in the freezer. 

Trader Joe's - Cauliflower Gnocchi 

Cauliflower has become increasingly well-known for being an versatile vegetable. Cauliflower Gnocchi is a delicious dish sold exclusively at Trader Joes, and a tasty lower-carb option compared to regular gnocchi. Each container has about 2.5 servings. For each serving (1 cup), there is 0.5g of saturated fat, 460mg of sodium, 6g of fiber and 2g of protein. To cook, we recommend pan frying the gnocchi in a little bit of olive or avocado oil until golden brown. You can add your favorite vegetables and sauce to the dish as well!

Trader Joe's - Chicken Burrito Bowl

If you are looking for a delicious and healthy Mexican style dish, try this! It’s another product sold at Trader Joes, and is packed with fiber and protein. There is 1 serving in each container, which contains 4g of saturated fat, 560mg of sodium, 10g of fiber and 22g of protein. 

Trader Joe's - Channa Masala 

This frozen dish from Trader Joes is perfect if you’re craving Indian cuisine. It’s a flavorful dish with chickpeas and a variety of spices such as cumin and fenugreek. There is 1 serving in each container, which offers 2g of saturated fat, 490mg of sodium, 6g of fiber, and 6g of protein. 

Caulipower Pizza “Live Life on The Veg”

This pizza crust is made from cauliflower and is topped with a wide assortment of veggies -- and also a delicious source of protein! The serving size is ½ pizza (155g), which contains 3.5g of saturated fat, 510mg of sodium, 3g of fiber and 9g of protein. This pizza is also great because it is gluten free, low-carb, and packed with vitamins. 

Amy’s - Light and Lean, Quinoa & Black Beans with Butternut Squash & Chard 

Amy’s products can be found at most supermarkets. Each container is 1 serving and contains 0g of saturated fat, 330mg of sodium, 7g of fiber and 10g of protein. This particular meal is loaded with plant protein and high in fiber. 

Amy’s - Brown Rice, Black Eyed Peas, & Veggie Bowl 

This is another bowl by Amy’s that is absolutely delicious. Similar to the other 

Amy’s product above, this bowl is loaded with plant protein and high in fiber, which is sure to satisfy you. There is 1 serving per container, and it contains 1.5g of saturated fat, 590mg of sodium, 5g of fiber, and 9g of protein. 

Evol Foods - Balance Bowl 

Evol Foods Balance Bowl is a delicious bowl full of vegetables, chicken and quinoa. It uses wholesome ingredients and the meal is ready in minutes. 

Each bowl is 1 serving and contains 3g of saturated fat, 390mg of sodium, 3g of fiber, and 13g of protein. 

Green Giant - Harvest Protein Bowls 

Green Giant’s Harvest Protein Bowls are fairly new and come in a variety of styles such as

California Style, Italian Style, SouthWest Style and Asian Style. You can find these bowls at a variety of supermarkets, and each bowl contains 0-1.5g of saturated fat, 500-590mg of sodium, 8-14g of fiber, and 12-14g of protein.
